Bangladeshi-American community,
It is an honor to update you on the progress of the Shaheed Minar project at the Bangladesh-American Center. The Shaheed Minar is a symbol of sacrifice by our ancestors that ultimately presented us with a sovereign nation and the right to speak in our mother language.
Building the Shaheed Minar at the Bangladesh-American Center is an original dream of the community reflected in the master plan of this Center. It is a fact that the Shaheed Minar in Houston is the first ever built on a Bangladesh community owned land anywhere outside of Bangladesh. The United Nations Education Science & Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recognized the sacrifice of the language martyrs and pronounced February 21st as the International Mother Language Day (IMLD) to focus global efforts to celebrate and safeguard languages. This international recognition of the sacrifice of our ancestors has provided the Bangladesh community with the opportunity to present the Shaheed Minar as the platform to nurture not only Bangla but all other 140 plus languages spoken by the rich and diverse community in Houston. The Shaheed Minar at our Center will be the gathering place for everyone to celebrate their mother language.
We are focused on building the permanent Shaheed Minar by the end of 2022. We need your participation and support. We look forward to sending you regular updates about the progress of this noble project.
