Intl. Mother Language Day, Held On Sunday 21 February 2010

Houston Bangladeshi Community organized an elaborate p2010 rogram with other local community organizations to observe the International Mother Language Day on February 21, 2010 at the Bangladesh-American Center.
Although weather forecast was unfavorable, 100s of people showed up to show their respect to the language martyrs and observe the day.
This year’s highlight was children language festival to celebrate language and culture. Bangladesh Association, Houston hosted the event. Participating organization include Nepalese Association of Houston, Tagore Society of Houston, Houston Durga Bari Society, Bangladesh Student Organization of University of Houston.
Programs started with the traditional morning rally- Probhat Ferri leading to the Shahid Minar and placing wreath and flowers. This was followed by children’s musical, children’s art competition and cultural presentations by Indian, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Association, Houston’s Chairperson Mr. Afzal Ahmed delivered the welcome speech to the audience. Honorable Peter Brown, City Councilman 2005-2009 was the guest of honor. Mr. Peter Brown addressed the audience and pledged his support in the effort that the Bangladeshis of Houston are taking in establishing a permanent Shaheed Minar in Houston by the City of Houston. It should be noted that Mr. Brown is a life member of Bangladesh Association, Houston.
